Letter from the President
Dear Royal Dames and Supporters,
How many of you have lost a loved one to cancer or have watched a dear friend or relative suffer through tortuous treatments as they battle the disease? The answer is far too many of you. This is at the heart of our mission. Since 1969 this charitable organization comprised of passionate women of Greater Fort Lauderdale has been raising funds dedicated to research efforts at the Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research (RGI) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). The institute conducts research on cancer diagnostics and powerful therapeutics for breast, lung, prostate, ovarian and colorectal cancers.
We have funded over $3 million of research instrumental in RGI’s discovery and development of new cancer drugs that have received US patent approval. The patented F-16 compound, that we help fund, is now showing effectiveness equal to Taxol and better than some other anti-cancer drugs. Additionally, RGI recently received two prestigious grants to advance studies in a new cancer treatment strategy using Phycocyanin, a compound extracted from bacteria that grows in our own Florida Everglades. It's all very hopeful and exciting.
This past year RGI relocated to its new home in the state-of-the-future Center for Collaborative Research. Located on NSU's main campus in Davie, Florida, the 215,000 square foot facility is home to one of Florida's largest wet labs, and some of the world's most accomplished researchers. With these remarkable new facilities, we are certain to see accelerated progress in the battle to treat, cure and prevent cancer.
"Man is not destined to die of cancer." It is more than the motto of the Royal Dames. It has become the mantra for the researchers at RGI. Every Royal Dame and sponsor can take pride in RGI’s accomplishments. To be president of this organization is a privilege, and I take this role very seriously, dedicating my time and effort to helping our organization continue the legacy of supporting meaningful efforts to treat and eradicate this disease.
Please join us in supporting the 48th Annual Tiara Ball, "Love is All You Need," where we will honor three amazing Royal Dames — Carol Harrison Kalagher, Dr. Nell Lewis McGuire and Mary Short.
Let’s fund a cure!
